The first Greek settlers arrived in Tarpon Springs in 1905, when they were hired to work as divers in the growing sponge harvesting industry. The district has thrived as a cultural haven where generations have planted roots that sprouted into what has now become a prime Florida destination. The Sponge Docks is part of the Greektown Historic District that is on the National Register of Historic Places.
